HPTLC Symposium 2011, Basel, Switzerland
HPTLC – 2011 : A big success for Indian participants

At the HPTLC 2011 Symposium in Basel, Switzerland, some 250 participants from 40 countries were present.  The Indian contingents of 40 analysts were conspicuous not only by their numbers but also by the  large number of oral (6) and poster (50) presentations.

The Indian participants were delighted with the quality of all presentations, the venue, the organization and the support of Anchrom.

Most participants expressed desire to be present at the next Symposium.  Some even want it held in India, in future.

Pl. see www.hptlc.com for abstracts of this and past Symposia.

 TLC-DBS-MS 500
Camag just announced and practically demonstrated the concept of Dried Blood Spot (DBS) analysis for clinical studies.
The TLC-DBS-MS 500 is a device than can handle 500 “cards” each carrying upto 4 dried blood spots, fully automatically.  That includes picking up the card from storage rack identifying it, determining the central position of the dried spot, addition of a reagent or internal standard, elution of the dried spot and finally washing, to eliminate carry over.
DBS analysis has many advantages and clinical studies are slowly shifting in this direction.

GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH SCHOLARS

Anchrom has started the Research Scholar (R.S.) scheme in 1993, as one of its schemes towards Corporate
Social Responsibility. Under this scheme, we have passed out more than 165 scholars, so far.
Currently we have two schemes, as follows.

Scheme I: Earn & Learn (Ph.D.)
This Scheme is for those who want to do Ph. D. under our “Earn & Learn” scheme. R.S. under this scheme have to work full time in our lab and also do Ph. D. work side by side. Many times both happen in parallel i.e. lab work for others may be part of Ph. D. work. They will be paid a minimum stipend of Rs.4000/p.m, Rs.5000/p.m, Rs.6000/pm in the first, second and third year with us. Anchrom will bear the related expenses i.e. tuition fees, expenses at Anchrom, normal reagents, thesis preparation etc. During the work, the R.S. will get an excellent exposure due to travel all over India, meeting numerous customers, doing a variety of chemical analysis. Generally Anchrom can find suitable projects and assist in finding Research guides. We expect the Ph.D. work to be completed in 2.5 to 3 years.

Scheme II: Research scholars
This scheme II is mainly for unemployed or fresh students, who wish to take up a job in the industry, after having done M.Sc. in Chem (pref. Analytical or Organic or Physical).
The aim of this scheme is to give hands on training in sophisticated analytical instrumentation on real life analytical projects. In the last 13 years, we have recruited and passed out such 165 R.S. A stipend was paid and they were given hands-on training by allowing them to work in our lab. The industries and research labs recruit our R.S. since they find it convenient to recruit persons with some hands-on experience. Some brilliant R.S. were absorbed by Anchrom. Average time spent by R.S. at Anchrom is about 3 to 6 months, before they find a job.

Stipend offered is as follows:
Rs.3000/- p.m. for first 3 months
Rs.4000/- p.m. for next 4 months
Common for both schemes:

All expenses made for company’s work will be reimbursed e.g. travel, photocopies, lodging/boarding on tour etc. The R.S. are expected to work in the lab and do all the work, as everyone else does i.e. all work related to analysis, training and installation of equipment besides participating in exhibitions, visiting libraries, extending hospitality to visitors, library related work, obtaining standards and samples etc. Daily lab work is to be recorded in the form of work sheets.

The environment must be kept clean. Organic solvents use must be minimized. GLP guidelines must be followed. Work allotted must be done in the specified time.

The R.S. are required to travel all over India, as part of their training. R.S. are encouraged to ask questions and learn quickly. They must show initiative and responsibility. For all round development, they may visit and learn from other departments such as Service, Admin and Marketing. At least 1 hour should be spent reading, everyday.

R.S. are welcome to make suggestions to improve the working at Anchrom. They must never disclose / discuss Anchrom matters with any outside person.

The current working hours are 0900 to 1800, Mon. through Sat. Sundays are holidays. R.S. are eligible for Anchrom’s declared public holidays. Additionally they can take sick leaves.
You are invited to our lab to evaluate there schemes. Please phone us before coming.
